The Nigerian Golden Eaglets have been crowned the Champion of the just concluded FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Chile for the record fifth time after thrashing their
Malian counterparts 2 goals to nil. Goals from Victor Osimhen (56mins) and Funsho Bamigboye (59mins) were enough to decide the encounter in favour of the Golden Eaglets.
This has now made Nigeria the only country to have won this cadet world cup five times and the second team to have successfully defended their title. We should recall that before now, Brazil has been the only Champion to have won back to back in 1997 and 1999. Futhermore, they have also maintained their record of never loosing to an African team.
Victor Osimhen, who emerged as both tournament highest goal scorer and silver ball winner has also set another milestone with his 10 goals haul being the highest goals ever scored in this tournament from inception. The longstanding record of 9 goals both set by Sinama Pongolle and Souleymane of Cote D'ivoire are now in the past.
Kudos to the Golden Eaglets, they deserved it all the way......
